When I went to see the incredible Corpus Clock and Chronophage (literally translated as Time Eater) I was so impressed that I decided to make a film about it. When I came home though I looked on YouTube and saw that it had already been done. However I was struck by the strong and varied opinions left in the comments, so decided to make my film not just about the clock but also about peoples response to it. A few details about the clock: It is situated on the outside of the Taylor Library at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. It cost 1 million pounds and is plated with 24 carat gold. The designer John C. Taylor, an old member of the College, funded it. It slows down, speeds up and sometimes stops to illustrate the relativity of time (you will notice the pendulum change speed a few times in the film if you look closely) but it is right every 5 minutes. The dominating visual feature of the clock is a sculpture of a grim-looking, devouring, metal insect similar to a grasshopper or locust. Taylor calls this beast the Chronophage. It moves its mouth, appearing to "eat up" the seconds as they pass, and occasionally it "blinks" in seeming satisfaction. The creature's constant motion produces an eerie grinding sound that suits its task. The hour is tolled by the sound of a chain clanking into a small wooden coffin hidden in the back of the clock.
