PAOLO NESPOLI: SIX MONTHS OUT of THIS WORLD

GIOVEDÌ SCIENZA 26th EDITION: 17 november 2011 The photographic account of an extraordinary scientific and human experience. In the five months spent on the International Space Station, Paolo Nespoli performed many scientific duties in his mission, but the very special activity to which he dedicated himself was the observation of the Earth from that privileged position, an orbit at an altitude of 350 kilometres. This is the main theme of his talk, accompanied by extraordinary images that he was able to take from up there. Some of these had never been taken before for safety reasons, such as the detachment of the Shuttle and the Soyuz from the Space Station. Nonetheless, our planet is the great protagonist. Nespoli has documented its extraordinary beauty and also its points of crisis due to pollution (including light pollution that impedes vision of the marvellous spectacle of the star-filled sky), to climate change with global warming, and to demographic growth. No direct signs of human life can be glimpsed from this altitude, and this tells us how small we are, even though humanity has reached a population of 7 billion. However, indirect signs can be seen, and they are often worrying. The meeting with Nespoli will be an opportunity to reflect on our blue planet as well as to admire it.

Più ci si avvicina al “core” del pianeta, più questa... 25 gennaio 2012 | blog: Notizie dal cosmo | Leggi l'articolo
