The tumor spreads peripherally, sometimes for several centimeters, and invades after considerable time. Slowly growing lesions may be present for years before patients seek help. The circumscribed, round-to-oval, red, scaling plaque resembles a plaque of eczema, psoriasis, extramammary Paget's disease, or Bowen's disease. However, careful inspection of the border reveals its thin, raised, pearly white nature. The characteristic features can also be appreciated by eliminating the redness with lateral finger pressure.
